I'm still not sold, but it's fantastic to know that other people actually really enjoyed it and why they did!Athena K.http://issaquahbooker.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3884614255436179739.post-8444377960437240792011-12-14T16:03:48.374-08:002011-12-14T16:03:48.374-08:00I loved this book. I'm English, so I guess I wasn't really interested in whether or not he was painting an unflattering picture of America (and to be fair, a lot of mainstream American media does a perfectly good job of that without needing anyone else's help).

What I loved: the author's use of language is incredible - particularly his use of metaphor. The voice of the narrator was fantastic - for me it was like a modern take on Catcher in the Rye: a frustrated, confused, disaffected young man, trying to deal with a messed up, illogical world.

I don't think there is any need to get overly hung up on all the 'issues' (religion, obesity, gun control) - sure, I think they were used to illustrate how messed up parts of America are. But I think they are just used as a backdrop which allow the author to explore the things I mentioned at the end of my previous paragraph and that you mentioned at the end of your last paragraph :)Tom Le Mesurierhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08649590395207852407noreply@blogger.com
